Dupuytren’s Contracture

WHY DUPUYTREN’S CONTRACTURE

Some people are more prone to thick tissue being formed around tendons in the palm, a condition known as Dupuytren’s contracture. This can make normal hand movement nearly impossible, in which case, Dupuytren’s contracture surgery could be needed. Miami Valley Plastic Surgeons is proud to provide Dupuytren’s contracture surgery to all of their patients in Dayton, Centerville, Kettering, Troy, and other nearby cities in Ohio.

FAQs

Connective tissue in the palm can become thickened, forming into bands that pull the fingers inward so that they appear to be permanently bent or crooked. This condition is known as palmar fibromatosis or Dupuytren’s contracture. Doctors are not certain why Dupuytren’s contracture forms, but have discovered that genetics does play a role. It is also common among those who perform most of their work with their hands.

Dupuytren’s contracture treatment can:

You may be recommended for Dupuytren’s contracture surgery if you:

Pre-operative instructions will be given to you during your consultation and may include such things as stopping smoking or not eating for 10 to 12 hours before receiving anesthesia.

Local anesthesia will be administered, allowing one of our board-certified physicians to make an incision into the palm of your hand. Thickened tissue will then be removed and the area sewn shut.

It will take between 45 and 90 minutes to perform your procedure, based upon the amount of scar tissue that must be removed.

You will have limited movement in the hand where Dupuytren’s contracture surgery was performed. Avoid picking things up with that hand for about a week afterwards.

Visible scars are very possible after hand surgery; however, a scar revision is typically very successful when it comes to reducing or eliminating those scars.

You will gradually notice better movement in your hand and fingers as you heal from surgery. It could take as long as one to three months to notice the full results.

Many people who undergo Dupuytren’s contracture treatment never suffer from this problem again, although it is entirely possible that you could contract palmar fibromatosis again in the future.

If your hands are also thin and wrinkled, you may want to consider a fat transfer and injection procedure to help fill them out.

Because you may have different needs than any other patient, we will not be able to discuss the exact cost with you until after your consultation. Cash, personal checks, and credit cards are always accepted for any of the procedures we offer, and many of our patients will also qualify for low-interest financing.
