Onocoplastic Reconstruction
WHY ONOCOPLASTIC RECONSTRUCTION
Breast cancer does not always result in a mastectomy. In some cases, a lumpectomy can be performed to remove only the cancerous lesion. This leaves women in Dayton, Centerville, Springfield, and other nearby areas in Ohio a good candidate for onocoplastic reconstruction performed by one of the board-certified surgeons at Miami Valley Plastic Surgeons.
A lumpectomy can leave a breast distorted. Onocoplastic reconstruction uses the remaining breast tissue to reshape the breast so that it appears more natural. At the same time, the opposite breast is summarily reduced in size and shape to match the other one.
This type of breast reconstruction does not interfere with radiation therapy, which is why it is often recommended for women who require it. Removing excess tissue also has a secondary benefit, which is to eliminate sagging.
Typically, large-breasted women who only need a lump removed are the best candidates for this surgery. This is because women with small busts may not have enough excess tissue to sculpt a breast with after a lump is removed.
It is important to obtain a timeline for radiation or chemotherapy treatment, as this can affect when your surgery is scheduled.
Under general anesthesia, an incision will be made in one or more of the following areas:
Each procedure is different, but most take between two and four hours.
Some swelling and bruising could be seen for about a week or so afterwards. You might also notice tenderness, particularly in the nipple area. Wear a sports bra for support and loose fitting tops to ensure your clothing does not rub against your skin too much.
Every effort will be made to hide your scars; however, we cannot guarantee that you will not have visible scarring.
Your breasts will be very symmetrical in size and shape following onocoplastic reconstruction. You will notice this difference almost immediately.
You can expect your results to last indefinitely.
Since onocoplastic reconstruction also uplifts the breasts, many patients elect to undergo a tummy tuck to complete their new look.
