Gynecomastia
WHY GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY
A well-defined chest is a sign of masculinity, so it is no surprise that men who develop what appear to be feminine breasts often feel bad about themselves. The development of “man boobs” is known as gynecomastia, and is a common condition among men in Dayton, Centerville, Miamisburg, Huber Heights, and the surrounding areas in Ohio. Gynecomastia surgery performed at Miami Valley Plastic Surgeons can provide relief from this often, embarrassing condition.
Gynecomastia surgery is a procedure performed on men to reduce the size of their breasts, and is often referred to as a male breast reduction. It involves removing excess tissue and sculpting the chest to provide a more masculine appearance. Men often choose this surgery after experiencing significant weight gain or taking certain medications for which the development of breast tissue is a known side effect.
Any man who has begun to develop feminine-looking breasts may be a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery, provided he is in good health, and the condition is not a side effect of medication. When gynecomastia results from taking medication, the condition could return a short while later, making surgery counterproductive. Men who are significantly overweight may also need to lose a few pounds first.
You should make arrangements to have someone drive you home from your appointment since you will likely be groggy from the anesthesia.
Expect to spend an hour or so getting ready for your male breast reduction, which will involve monitoring your vital signs, reviewing your medical chart, and confirming the exact surgical technique. Once these things are accomplished, you will be taken to a surgery room before being given local or general anesthesia. You will lie comfortably on a table while the surgeon performs the procedure, and may wish to take a short nap, read a book, or watch television to pass the time.
The procedure itself will take approximately two hours, and you could also need to remain in a recovery room for an hour or so once the surgeon finishes.
Your chest may be sore, and some light swelling may also be present. You might find it difficult to raise your arms above your head or lift very heavy objects. Many doctors recommend not performing heavy weightlifting workouts at the gym for about a week or so after a male breast reduction.
Whenever possible, a peri-areolar incision is made around the edges of the areola. This leaves scarring to a minimum, allowing any scars that are present to be nicely camouflaged.
Your chest will be covered with bandages initially, meaning that the full results may not be immediately visible. Once your sutures begin to heal, swelling will also subside, and you will then be able to notice a remarkable difference in the way your chest looks. This timeline is different for everyone, but it generally takes between one and two weeks to notice the full results.
The results of gynecomastia surgery are intended to be permanent; however, you could develop “man boobs” again in the future if you subsequently gain a great deal of weight or begin taking medications for which gynecomastia is a side effect.
