Breast Reconstruction
WHY BREAST RECONSTRUCTION
Trauma, injury, or disease can leave a woman’s breasts disfigured, causing her emotional distress and a loss of self-esteem. Breast reconstruction surgery, performed in Dayton, OH, at Miami Valley Plastic Surgeons, can help women in Centerville, Troy, Kettering, and Springfield get their lives back on track again.
Breast reconstruction is the act of rebuilding a breast that has been either partially damaged or fully removed. It is a highly customizable surgery that may employ one or more of the following techniques:
After undergoing a mastectomy, many women suffer from depression because they feel as though they have lost their bodily identity. Breast reconstruction has been shown to help these ladies overcome the negative self-image they have of themselves, in which case depression also becomes less severe. For those who have not yet fully recovered from cancer, this new change in attitude can also give women the strength to continue fighting.
Breast reconstruction is often a very involved procedure, meaning that women must be in good health first. As such, you should obtain clearance from your primary care physician if you are undergoing any other significant treatment, even if your condition is not related to breast cancer.
This will depend upon the extent of your procedure, but some common things that could be required are X-rays, a mammogram, or blood testing to check for certain medical issues that might prohibit you from having anesthesia.
Some breast reconstruction procedures are performed in multiple stages. You will receive further guidance on what will happen during each stage when you come in for your consultation.
Again, this depends on how complicated your procedure is and whether you are having one or both breasts rebuilt. An average would be somewhere between two and four hours per breast.
You may be tender and sore following reconstruction surgery. We suggest wearing a sports bra with no underwire or padding during your recovery period. Use over-the-counter medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen if you experience swelling or other discomfort.
Some scarring is always possible, although our surgeons will do everything they can to minimize and/or disguise them as much as they can.
That will depend upon the type of procedure. Most people do notice some results right away, even those who require more than one operation.
The good news is that your breast reconstruction will provide you with positive results for a lifetime.
If a breast reconstruction makes you feel confident about wearing tank tops again, you might also desire brachioplasty to firm and tone your upper arms.
Because you may have different needs than any other patient, we will not be able to discuss the exact cost with you until after your consultation. Cash, personal checks, and credit cards are always accepted for any of the procedures we offer, and many of our patients will also qualify for low-interest financing.
