Skin Cancer Reconstruction in Dayton, OH
Skin cancer is one of the easiest types of cancer to treat, but unfortunately, it is also one of the most likely forms to cause disfigurement. Skin cancer reconstruction is needed to restore your former look and is available at Miami Valley Plastic Surgeons for the men and women in Dayton, Centerville, Beavercreek, Troy and other surrounding cities in Ohio.
What Is Skin Cancer Reconstruction?
The removal of skin cancer often requires physicians to remove a little bit of the surrounding skin. Depending on the severity of cancer, there could be large indentations remaining if the skin cancer has spread to the dermis. “Filling in” these indentations requires borrowing skin from another area and then placing it over top of the opening. Cartilage grafts could also be needed whenever skin cancer has been removed from the nose or ears.
We offer the following types of skin cancer reconstruction:
Benefits of Skin Cancer Reconstruction
Removing skin cancer eliminates the disease, but often leaves people with visible “battle scars” that they would just as soon hide. As such, skin cancer reconstruction is often the final step in helping patients heal. Most reconstructive procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis, meaning no hospital stay or downtime is required.
Who Is the Ideal Candidate for Skin Cancer Reconstruction?
Those who have been given the “all clear” from their physician, meaning that they are no longer suffering from cancer, can safely undergo skin cancer reconstruction.
What do I Need to do Before Skin Cancer Reconstruction?
You will be given more detailed instructions during your consultation, but a few of the things we often recommend are limiting sun exposure (including tanning beds) and taking good care of the skin to ensure there are no infections on the day of your surgery.
What Should I Expect on the Day of my Skin Cancer Reconstruction?
A numbing agent, typically local anesthesia, will be administered so that you do not feel any incisions. If you are receiving local anesthesia and the donor site and reconstruction site are very far apart, you could be given two separate injections, one in each location. Skin from the donor site will be removed first and kept carefully preserved until it can be put in place over top of your indentation. After being placed, this skin will be neatly trimmed to match the area, so there are no rough edges. This ensures a seamless appearance rather than a patchy look once the area has fully healed.
How Long Does it Take to Perform Skin Cancer Reconstruction?
Some skin cancer reconstructions can be performed in as little as 30 minutes, while others may take two to three hours.
What to Expect After Skin Cancer Reconstruction
Slight numbness and tingling could be felt, both at the donor and reconstruction site. This sensation will pass on its own over the next few days. Some patients also report itching, which can be alleviated by staying well hydrated and using non-allergenic lotion to eliminate dryness.
Will I Have Scars After Getting Skin Cancer Reconstruction?
Any scars you do have will be very small, meaning you will hardly notice them. Most patients who have had skin cancer reconstruction remark that they would much rather have their scar than the indentation they were trying to cover in the first place.
When Will I See the Results?
Your skin will be visibly smoother right away; however, you may be able to clearly distinguish your donor skin from your surrounding skin at first. As time goes on, the two areas of skin will fade into each other, leaving you virtually unable to tell where your donor skin ends and your natural skin begins.
How Long Will the Results of Skin Cancer Reconstruction Last?
The results of your skin cancer reconstruction will be permanent.
