How Is the IPL ® Photofacial Performed?
Before the procedure begins, you will be given protective eyewear to protect you from the bright flashes of light. A cool gel is often applied to the treatment area, both to lubricate the handpiece and to help cool the epidermis during the treatment. Dr. Troha, Dr. O’Neill or Nichole Gill PA-C will apply brief pulses of bright light to the skin through the handpiece. Generally, the IPL® Photofacial procedure takes about 30 minutes. We use a device called the Erbium laser, this laser is commonly used for anti-aging treatments and has minimal discomfort and no downtime. The Erbium laser works without cutting or damaging the skin because it specifically targets the cells you are treating with less damage than other lasers.
How Do I Know If IPL ® Photofacial Is Right for Me?

If you have facial redness, wrinkles, lines, uneven or blotchy skin tones, or a combination of these, this treatment is a terrific option for you. Will I Need Anesthesia for an IPL ® Photofacial?
We do not require any anesthesia for the IPL ® Photofacial treatment. A topical numbing treatment can be applied to help minimize any discomfort.
How Does IPL ® Photofacial Work?
At Miami Valley Plastic Surgeons, we use the Erbium fractional resurfacing technology for our IPL® Photofacial treatment. With this laser only portions of the skin receive the laser light, these bursts of light help to alleviate symptoms of aging skin such as facial wrinkles and skin discoloration. The typical standard of treatment is five sessions spaced apart by three to five weeks. Each of these treatments delivers a series of microscopic laser bursts which works to minimize these signs of aging. During your consultation, Dr. Troha, Dr. O’Neill or Nichole Gill PA-C, will discuss your unique treatment schedule and inform you of what to expect after the procedure is completed.
How Long Is The Recovery Time For an IPL ® Photofacial?
IPL® Photofacial requires minimal downtime. The healing process varies by patient but is often quick because there is very little damage to the skin. Generally, recovery time is a couple hours to one week for all the redness to fully fade. Dr. Troha, Dr. O’Neill, or Nichole Gill PA-C will discuss the post-treatment details with you during your consultation.
