Basal Cell Carcinoma Surgery

WHY BASAL CELL CARCINOMA SURGERY

Basal cell carcinoma is a common form of skin cancer, affecting more than three million Americans annually. Many of them live near Dayton, Centerville, Miamisburg, or Springfield, OH, and seek treatment from one of the board-certified physicians here at Miami Valley Plastic Surgeons.

FAQs

Basal cells are found in the deepest layer of your epidermis, which is your outer layer of skin. When abnormal growths or lesions arise from the basal cells, this condition is referred to as basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Since it rarely spreads to other areas of your body, it is rather easy to treat. That does not mean that basal cell carcinoma should not be taken seriously, as the risk of it spreading or becoming seriously infected increases whenever it is left untreated for a long period of time.

BCC lesions often appear as small, shiny bumps anywhere on the face or body. They may also be waxy, yellow-white scars, or red and pink growths with a sunken center. Open sores that ooze or bleed may frequently be dismissed as other wounds when they are in fact basal cell carcinoma.

Surgery options for BCC include:

1) Curettage and Electrodesiccation, or scraping the lesion away.
2) Mohs Surgery, in which case thin layers of skin are removed and then tested to ensure there is no more cancer left. This process continues until all of the cancer is gone.
3) Excision surgery, a process that involves cutting away the lesion with a scalpel.
4) Radiation or laser surgery, which requires the use of X-ray or laser beams to destroy the tumor.
5) Cryosurgery, whereby the tumor is frozen away with the help of liquid nitrogen.

Although basal cell carcinoma rarely spreads, there is no need to take chances. By failing to have it removed, you are gambling with your future health. There is really no need to take chances when basal cell carcinoma can be quickly and easily removed at any of our four office locations.

This also varies according to the procedure but could be anywhere from one to six hours.

Your skin may be numb and tingling or slightly swollen for a few days following surgery.

Whether or not you will have scars is not important. What is important is removing all of the basal cell carcinomas so that you can be cancer free again.

Because you may have different needs than any other patient, we will not be able to discuss the exact cost with you until after your consultation. Cash, personal checks, and credit cards are always accepted for any of the procedures we offer, and many of our patients will also qualify for low-interest financing.
